Liaison To Lake County

Since 2005 MCC has been represented at the various meetings of the Lake County Council and Commissioners.

We were instrumental in persuading all taxing districts, benefiting from the U.S. Steel settlement (except those controlled by the Mayor) to return the tax money, some $29,000,000 to the taxpayers of Calumet Township in the form of a tax credit on the first installment of the 2006 pay 2007 tax bill.

A combined effort with Team Hammond Taxpayers Group began in 2006 adding three to five additional observers at Lake County Council and various other governmental body meetings in Crown Point, Indianapolis and other cities/towns and centers of government engaged in the property tax reform effort. This effort continues with regular meetings to coordinate our efforts.

This committee monitors the Lake Council Meetings and reports significant items to the Property Tax Committee and MCC Board. We have a working relationship with a citizens' group inHammond, named "Team Hammond Citizen's Group," and with their able cooperation was able to rally large groups of citizens to attend important meetings, namely those related to the council's adoption of the 2% Property Tax Cap (a child of MCC) and other meetings concerning local property taxes. Since most of MCC's goals related to the property tax reform movement in Indiana have been realized, our efforts now concentrate on Lake County issues.
